HALEAKALA CRATER HIKE (FULL DAY)
Grandeur, majesty, vastness. Haleakala's subtle energy is intense and ethereal.
And it's absolutely silent. We hike along a spectacular trail overlooking the
north side of Haleakala with canyons dropping 2,000 to 3,000 feet. This ridge
trail has panoramic views of the ocean on one side and the crater on the other.
We descend to the crater floor 1,600 feet along a series of well-built
switchbacks. Views stretch for miles, from cloud forests and rain forests to the
alpine desert within Haleakala itself. On the crater floor, we pass huge slabs
of lava and bizarre rock formations. After lunch, we return up the switchbacks.

HALEAKALA CRATER HIKE (HALF DAY)
This we call the "Crater Sampler." We hike part way down both the switchback
trail at 8,000 feet and the summit trail at 10,000 feet. We don't reach the
crater floor, but we do experience the volcano's power and its silence, plus,
we have magnificent views from our vantage point up high. This is a good
workout, giving a true feeling of the crater without being strenuous.

FAQ:
What shoes do we wear?
Running shoes or hiking boots are fine for all the hikes. Tevas are fine
for the rain forest treks, but not for anything strenuous or mountainous
--unless you have strong feet. Your shoes may get muddy or
dirty on any of the hikes.
What clothes should we wear?
Shorts and short-sleeved shirts are best for most hikes. Haleakala Crater
and the Cloud Forest hikes are often cool, so a jacket, down vest,
sweatshirt or sweater is recommended.
Do we need to bring anything else?
A towel, if the hike includes swimming, and sun screen.
Are there mosquitoes?
In the rain forests, yes. In Haleakala Crater, the coastal areas and
the Cloud Forest, no. We bring mosquito repellent, but bring your own,
if you prefer a particular brand.
Should we bring water?
No
Should we bring a camera?
Yes
Will there be a bathroom on the trail?
In most cases, no. If you're uncomfortable using the bushes, please let
us know when you sign up for the hike and we'll see if the guide can
make a bathroom stop before we reach the trailhead.
